Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP announced Jan. 8 that R.J. Colwell has joined the firm as a senior associate in the energy and mining group.
Colwell specializes in mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, private equity investments and joint ventures within the energy and natural resources sectors. He is admitted to practice in Colorado, Texas and Washington, D.C.
With experience in operational and commercial agreements, Colwell represents both domestic and international clients, including private equity funds and their portfolio companies. He has advised clients on transactional and state and federal regulatory issues related to investments in and the sale or acquisition of entities across the entire energy value chain.
Colwell’s expertise covers crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids, produced and recycled water, biomethane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide and conventional and renewable power. He has also advised clients on regulatory and transactional aspects of natural gas and strategic energy projects located around the globe.
Prior to joining Davis Graham, Colwell practiced oil and gas law in Houston for six years and most recently served as the global co-chair of White & Case’s midstream practice group. Earlier in his legal career, he served as an honors attorney and then attorney-advisor at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, DC. As an attorney-advisor, he advised DOE senior leadership on transactional, operational, regulatory and policy issues and matters involving natural gas, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, energy security and other programs involving coal, petroleum and natural gas. As an honors attorney, Colwell earned the Secretary’s Achievement Award for his enforcement work on energy efficiency standards.
Colwell received his J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before law school, Colwell served as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain in three years. During his military service, Colwell was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Colwell is active in a number of veterans organizations, including Impact A Hero, the PTSD Foundation of America’s Camp Hope and the Veteran Leadership Development Group.
