Greenberg Traurig announced Oct. 10 that Kevin Kelley, Andrea Austin, Austin Evans and Chloe Mickel joined the firm’s Denver office. Kelley, Austin and Evans joined as shareholders, and Mickel joined as of counsel. Kelley and Austin’s commercial real estate practice focuses on master-planned developments, redevelopments and mixed-use, multifamily, retail, office and industrial spaces at every stage in the transaction. Evans is a trial lawyer whose practice focuses on defending consumer-facing manufacturers and retailers against claims of product defects in individual and mass tort cases.

Evans was previously senior in-house counsel at Walmart, and he has frequently worked on multidistrict and other products liability litigation on behalf of Walmart and other manufacturers. Mickel works on both transactional and litigation matters focused on construction law. She represents owners, developers and other construction professionals, as well as interior designers, with a focus on data center developers and operators.

Holland & Knight announced Oct. 14 that Ted Mayle joined the firm’s Denver office as a partner. Mayle will be part of the firm’s intellectual property practice. He joins the firm with Dallas-based partner Kris Reed. Both Reed and Mayle joined Holland & Knight from Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton. Mayle’s practice focuses on patent infringement litigation and appeals, and administrative actions before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Mayle received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, a master’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy. 

The judiciary

On Oct. 16, Gov. Jared Polis appointed Ian MacLaren to the Montezuma County Court in the 22nd Judicial District, filling the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge JenniLynn Lawrence to the District Court in the 21st Judicial District, effective immediately. MacLaren is the Montezuma County attorney, a position he’s held since 2021. His practice consists of civil matters. MacLaren is also a Dolores County Court judge and Dove Creek Municipal Court judge, positions he’s held since 2024 and 2023, respectively. His dockets consist of civil, criminal and municipal matters, according to the announcement. Previously, he was assistant Montezuma County attorney from 2016 to 2021 and a private practitioner from 2016 to 2021. MacLaren received his bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 2009 and his J.D. from Gonzaga University School of Law in 2012.

On Oct. 17, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck announced Elizabeth Paulsen, a shareholder in the firm’s corporate and business department, joined the board of directors of Mental Health Colorado, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to pass laws, change practices and build a movement to promote healthier minds across the lifespan for all Coloradans. In her three-year term, Paulsen will help the organization with its review of its monthly financials, budget and annual audit report.
