Gov. Jared Polis on Aug. 12 appointed Jenny Lopez Filkins to the Larimer County Court in the 8th Judicial District. The vacancy is created by the retirement of Judge Mary Joan Berenato and is effective Sept. 16.
Lopez Filkins is a senior assistant city attorney for the City of Fort Collins, a position she’s held since 2014. Her practice consists of municipal, employment and constitutional law, according to the announcement. Previously, she was the Title VI coordinator for the City of Fort Collins’ finance department from 2013 to 2014; assistant city attorney for the City of Fort Collins from 2006 to 2013; sole practitioner at Lopez Filkins Law Firm, LLC from 2004 to 2006; affirmative action and diversity manager for Coors Brewing Company from 2000 to 2001; and associate attorney for DiFalco & Associates from 1992 to 1999. Lopez Filkins earned her bachelor’s degree from Colorado College in 1989 and her J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School in 1992.
Polis also appointed Tarryn Johnson on Aug. 12 to fill a vacancy on the 15th Judicial District Court, created by the retirement of Judge Stanley Brinkley, effective Dec.10.
Johnson is a senior deputy public defender in the La Junta Regional Office, a position she’s held since 2021. According to the announcement, her practice consists of criminal defense. Previously, she was general counsel and chief legal officer for Southeast Colorado Power Association in 2021, senior deputy state public defender from 2019 to 2021 and deputy state public defender from 2015 to 2019 in La Junta. Johnson earned her bachelor’s degree from Adams State University in 2011 and her J.D. from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2015.
