DU Names 2018 Law Stars

Christopher Richardson, Patricia Jarzobski and K.K. DuVivier to be recognized in November

The University of Denver Sturm College of Law will recognize its 2018 Law Stars honorees at a gala event on Nov. 1 at the Hilton Denver City Center.

DU Law Stars honors distinguished alumni and faculty, and proceeds from the event will go to the Denver Law Fund, which supports the Sturm College of Law’s strategic priorities, including affordability, curricular innovation and postgraduate professional opportunities. 


This year’s event will honor Christopher Richardson, recipient of the William Keating Outstanding Alumni Award; Patricia Jarzobski, recipient of the Robert McWilliams, Jr. Alumni Professionalism Award; and professor K.K. DuVivier, recipient of the Robert Yegge Excellence in Teaching Award.

Richardson is a corporate and restructuring partner at Davis Graham & Stubbs, where he had also served as managing partner for 15 years. Richardson has experience in transactional and restructuring matters relating to the oil and gas industry and is currently representing exploration and production companies in restructuring and bankruptcy matters.  

Jarzobski is a recognized leader, a mentor and an adviser in the law community. Her accomplishments include serving as past-president of the Colorado Bar Association, the CBA’s fifth female president in 119 years and the first female president in 10 years. 

She was also selected by colleagues to become a Colorado Bar Foundation fellow, an honor limited to five percent of Colorado attorneys for their prominence, reputation and good standing in the legal community. In addition, she served as past president of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association and was appointed by Gov. John Hickenlooper to serve a six-year term on the 17th Judicial District Judicial Nominating Commission.

DuVivier is a nationally known scholar in the field of natural resources and renewable energy issues, currently focusing on solar and wind. She joined the faculty at Denver Law in 2000, earning many honors including Association of American Law Schools DU Teacher of the Year 2015, Mentorship Award 2013-2014, Hughes-Ruud Research Professor 2015 and the 2013 Sturm Faculty Excellence Award for Best Professor. Her scholarship and teaching has focused on a variety of subjects over the years, and she has taught interdisciplinary courses and received a National Science Foundation award to partner with an atmospheric scientist and an economist to address wind-farm impacts.

CJI Announces New Executive Director

The Colorado Judicial Institute announced Tuesday that Joshua Anderson has been appointed executive director of the Denver-based nonprofit.

“With a passion for social justice and more than two decades of experience in all aspects of nonprofit fundraising and management, Joshua brings a host of fresh ideas and energy to CJI’s core mission of preserving and enhancing the excellence of our state’s merit-based judicial system,” said board chair Barbara Randell.

In his role as executive director, Anderson will oversee the CJI’s day-to-day operation as well as public policy efforts, such as public education, research projects and judicial education. 

In his professional career as an active events fundraiser, Anderson has managed large-scale galas, walks, runs, and bicycle tours including many for the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Colorado Health Network’s AIDS Walk and the National MS Society’s Bike MS. 

Anderson also has extensive volunteer experience, initially as board chair for Team Colorado, a nonprofit membership organization he founded in 1994 for LGBTQ athletes and artists participating in the quadrennial Gay Games. He also chaired a masters swim team board in Denver, SQUID, and is an active fundraiser for AIDS Lifecycle, a cycling event for AIDS.

Anderson is a graduate of the Lundy Leadership Initiative and a certified foster parent.

Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced Sept. 24 the addition of Darin Brown to the firm’s Denver office. Brown joins as counsel on the trademark and copyright team in the firm’s intellectual property department.

Brown’s practice focuses on helping clients in technology, media, entertainment, food and beverage, and other industries acquire, protect, and enforce their trademark rights. 

Brown is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned his law degree at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York.

Judicial Announcements

Colorado Court of Appeals Judge Steve Bernard was appointed Friday as Chief Judge-designate to replace Alan Loeb as the court’s administrative leader. Chief Judge Loeb, who is retiring effective Dec. 27, will work with Bernard to ensure a smooth transition.

“Chief Judge Loeb has served the Court and Colorado extremely well in his distinguished career,” said Chief Justice Nathan Coats, who made the appointment. 

“I am confident Judge Bernard will provide the high level of leadership excellence Coloradans deserve in their court system,” he said. 

Bernard, a native of Colorado Springs, earned his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Colorado in 1975 and his law degree from CU in 1978. He worked as a prosecutor in Adams County for 26 years before becoming chief deputy district attorney in Weld County where he served for about a year-and-a-half before joining the Court of Appeals.

“I am profoundly humbled by the trust that Chief Justice Coats has placed in me,” Bernard said. “I owe a great debt to the shining examples of the two Chief Judges with whom I have worked, Janice Davidson and Alan Loeb. Being selected as the Chief Judge of the extraordinary team at the Colorado Court of Appeals is the greatest honor of my legal career.”

The 18th Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet Oct. 29 at the Arapahoe County Justice Center to interview and select nominees for appointment by the governor to the office of county judge for Arapahoe County. 

The vacancy will be created by the appointment to the District Court of Judge John Scipione. The vacancy will occur on Oct. 2.

Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. Oct. 16. Any person wishing to suggest a candidate to fill the vacancy may do so by 4 p.m. Oct. 9.

The 3rd Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet Nov. 9 at the Huerfano County Courthouse to interview and select nominees for appointment by the governor to the office of county judge for Huerfano County. The vacancy will be created by the appointment to the District Court bench of Judge John McKisson III. The vacancy will occur on Jan. 8.
