Colorado held its first licensed legal paraprofessional exam on April 30 and the results are in.
Roughly 84 people applied to take the exam, 14 withdrew and 70 took the test. The exam consisted of 90 multiple-choice questions about family law, 45 ethics multiple-choice questions and two family law essays. The first set of multiple-choice questions about family law counted for 50% of the grading weight and took test takers 180 minutes. The other two sections each accounted for 25% of the final grade and both sections took 90 minutes each.
Colorado’s Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel reported 62 test takers passed the exam, which is an 89% pass rate. Roughly 11%, or 8 individuals, were unsuccessful.
On average, examinees in the state’s first LLP exam scored the highest on the ethics portion followed closely by the family law multiple-choice questions. Volunteer attorneys developed the six-hour exam focusing on core competency in line with the LLP Rules of Professional Conduct. A passing score for the new LLP exam was benchmarked at 68%, and the average score for the test was 75.41%.
The 62 examinees who passed may now pay their licensing fee, complete registration paperwork and take their oath of admission at a mandatory ceremony scheduled for June 20. Registration for the ceremony is required by June 17.
