The 2020 Colorado 200 survey, like most other annual check-ins, is a study of the coronavirus as much as it is a study of the legal market. Each year, Law Week Colorado’s reporting team conducts a survey of the 200 largest private practice law firms in Colorado.
We contacted the firms and solicited information via a survey, which was advertised in Law Week Colorado and on LawWeekColorado.com through October and November — confined to those two months to give us a snapshot of a moment in time.
The survey asks for the number of total attorneys at a firm, the number of Colorado attorneys and some other demographic and contact information. The list below only reflects headcount. Overall attorney numbers at law firms declined over the past year. For the past several years, we’ve seen the total number of attorneys counted on the list slowly tick up. This year’s list saw a decline of 55 attorneys. The whole number reduction isn’t too eyebrow-raising on its own, but when considering the average office has just 23 attorneys, the reduction represents two law firms worth of lawyers. Without many larger firms disappearing from the list, which would shift the representation of even smaller firms, we interpret this as an overall shrinking at law firms. Not indicated on this list is how many staff positions have been cut over the past year.
Also of note this year: We saw few acquisitions or mergers, as expected. According to Altman Weil’s MergerLine, law firm mergers hit a 10-year low as of Q2 2020, and of the 57 mergers announced to date, just 13 were between firms with more than 10 attorneys each. No significant mergers involved Colorado law firms.
This year’s list is a clearer, yet reinforced, snapshot at diversity at the partner ranks. We received information from more law firms this year regarding diversity among partnership, yet the numbers match our previous information —33% of partners are women and 8% are attorneys of color. Colorado beats the national average for women in partner positions but lags behind in minority representation.
