In the fight for social justice, lawyers are among those on the front lines
That was the message as the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association handed out awards at its annual spring dinner Thursday night. Lawyers from Rathod Mohamedbhai won the Case of the Year Award for their work on Jamal Hunter v. City and County of Denver.
“It’s because of the legal work, the political work and the social work of the people in this group that we’ve been able to achieve a modicum of success,” partner Siddhartha Rathod said.
The City and County paid Hunter $3.25 million after allegations of torture and abuse in the county jail. At the time, it was the largest civil rights settlement in city history and spurred promises for reform, including better hiring practices for deputies.
