To say the legal marijuana industry is growing like a weed may cause some eyes to roll, but the rising popularity of cannabis consumption is leaving a thicket of legal conflicts and questions in its wake.
A group of attorneys joined a panel discussion about the macro view of marijuana law Thursday during the Annual Meritas Meeting at the Westin Denver Downtown hotel.
The panel included the state’s director of marijuana coordination Andrew Freedman, Marijuana Industry Group director Michael Elliott, Amsterdam-based attorney Joost Houtman and Uruguayan corporate lawyer Juan Carlos Oreggia Carrau. Jack Tanner, a director in Fairfield and Woods’ Denver office, moderated the discussion, which veered from local regulatory issues, global stigmas and an uncertain future.
In Colorado, there is still “a lot of very serious work that has to get done,” Freedman said. “And what I’ve seen from the industry is a willingness to get this work done.”
