Ballard Spahr and Lindquist & Vennum announced today their agreement to merge at the beginning of next year. The pending deal would have the firms combining offices in Denver, and the Ballard Spahr brand would gain its first two locations in the Midwest.
Ballard Spahr, a national firm with locations in Boulder and Denver, will have more than 650 attorneys across 15 U.S. offices after the merger. Lindquist & Vennum currently has more than 140 attorneys across its offices in Denver, Minneapolis and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Mark Stewart, Philadelphia-based chair of Ballard Spahr, said in a press release that the addition of Lindquist & Vennum’s attorneys will help his firm grow its corporate transactional practice, particularly in private equity, and the firms’ practices are compatible besides.
“Our two firms share strength in financial services, litigation, energy and family wealth management. … That matches up well with our combined talents,” Stewart said. “Most importantly, the Lindquist lawyers are smart, creative and genuinely nice people. On every level, this combination feels right.”
Lindquist & Vennum’s firm managing partner in Minneapolis, Dennis O’Malley, told Law Week that the merger made sense for his firm. Ballard Spahr’s geographic reach will help Lindquist & Vennum better serve its clientele, which is already spread throughout the U.S., O’Malley said. On the other side, Lindquist & Vennum’s corporate, and private entity and bankruptcy practices appealed to Ballard Spahr, he added. “It’s a piece of the puzzle that fit together really well.”
O’Malley said Lindquist & Vennum was in talks with “a lot” of other firms earlier this year and had been discussing the prospect of merging with Ballard Spahr as early as February. The two groups held meet-and-greets in Denver and Philadelphia in June.
“These guys feel like the right mix for us,” O’Malley said. “They have what we want and we have what they want.”
Lindquist & Vennum’s Denver attorneys will move from their current space at 600 17th St to Ballard Spahr’s office at the 17th Street Plaza, both in Downtown Denver, O’Malley said. Lindquist & Vennum’s Minneapolis and Sioux Falls locations will take the larger firm’s name. Minneapolis will be home to Ballard Spahr’s largest office next to its Philadelphia location.
